#SayNoToSolarGeo! Blocking the Sun Is NOT a Climate Solution!

“[W]hen you start to reflect light away from the planet, you can easily imagine a chain of events that would extinguish life on earth.”

That’s what David Keith, one of the world’s top solar engineering scientists, told the New Yorker about his own life’s work.

With a warning like that, it’s easy to see why Mexico is banning solar geoengineering. That, and the fact that a start-up called “Make Sunsets” was caught trying to block the sun in Baja California Sur—without permission from, or even notifying, the government!

Moving in the other direction, the Biden Administration is officially exploring ways to stop sunlight from reaching the Earth, while the European Union has recently floated “a potential international framework” for going forward with research into this misguided and ineffective attempt to address the global climate crisis.

Few policy makers in the U.S. have tried to wrap their heads around this issue, but a group of Rhode Island state legislators have drafted a bill, the Atmosphere Protection Act that’s a great introduction.

Biden Administration Suspends Funding for Wuhan Lab

Jeremy Diamond and Simone McCarthy, report for CNN:

“The Biden administration has suspended funding for the Wuhan Institute of Virology following a months long review that determined that the Chinese research institute “is not compliant with federal regulations and is not presently responsible,” according to a memo from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The determination came after the research institute failed to provide the National Institutes of Health with requested documents amid reported safety concerns at the lab.

China has blocked international scientists from freely exploring all hypotheses for how the virus emerged – hampering research that could have potentially shone a light on the outbreak’s origin.

The World Health Organization has repeatedly called for further investigation in the country, including a laboratory audit and studies that could turn up evidence for the natural emergence of the virus.”

The Merlin Bird ID App

Author, Kelly Kizer Whitt, Earth Sky writes:

“On a relatively quiet Sunday evening in my neighborhood, I sat out on my porch about an hour before sunset. With the construction, lawn mowing and car sounds of the weekday finally absent, the air came alive with a chorus of birds. Using my recently downloaded Merlin Bird ID app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, I clicked on Sound ID and the app began recording all the tweets, chirps, caws and coos surrounding me.

I let the app run for 20 minutes, recording bird sounds the entire time. It automatically identified the birds behind the noises. As it did, it kept a running list in the window and would light up yellow beneath each bird’s name to indicate what my phone – and my ears – were hearing.

Over the 20 minutes, the app identified 15 birds. Most of them I was well-acquainted with, as they visit my bird feeders or hang out on my lawn. One of the birds, the common nighthawk, had a special half-filled circle by its name. The half circle indicates that it’s an uncommon species (apparently despite its moniker). Rare species would be indicated by a solid red circle.”

CULTURAL HISTORY OF FOOD

How Masa Harina Changed the Course of Human History — and Gave Us Better Tacos

By Michael La Corte, Salon:

Author and “Masienda” founder Jorge Gaviria speaks about the far-reaching significance of masa:

“What exactly is heirloom masa?

Let’s start with the second word. Masa is the Spanish word for dough. In this case, we are referring to dough made from freshly ground nixtamalized corn or hominy. Nixtamalization is the ancient process of cooking corn in a mixture of alkali (like slaked lime or wood ash) and water.

When fresh masa is dehydrated and ground into a fine flour, it’s called masa harina, or ‘dough flour,’ which is the just-add-water ingredient many cooks use for making tortillas at home if they don’t have access to fresh masa. Next, heirloom. Until Masienda came around, most of the masa harina on the market was made from low-quality, genetically modified commodity field corn. When we talk about the heirloom corn that we sell (both in whole-kernel form and masa harina), we are referring to corn that comes from farmer-preserved seeds that have been hand selected for the best flavor and maintained for hundreds (even thousands) of years. These seeds are 100% farmer owned and exist outside of the large-scale value chains that we associate with the hybrid corn grown in the U.S..”

NO CORN, NO COUNTRY

Ten Years in Defense of the Milpa, Native Corns and Mexican Biodiversity

Mercedes López Martínez, Delegate for the Demanding Collective Against GMO Corn, for Regeneration International reports:

“From the collective lawsuit against transgenic corn, we claim that “coexistence” of transgenic corn and native corn is not possible, according to research in other nations that demonstrate where transgenics are planted, there is contamination by pollen carried by the wind or pollinators action. To legalize planting will promote this contamination that directly threatens biodiversity and the most important agricultural genetic patrimony of Mexico, passed on by millions of farmers and indigenous peoples that created it and safeguard it today.

During these 10 years we must congratulate ourselves on the big international victory that represents stopping powerful transnational companies like Bayer-Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow Agrosciences and Phi Mexico (known as DuPont-Corteva) alongside of Sagarpa and Semarnat, authorities that were accomplices a decade ago, without a care of the pollution of native corns nor the fatality that their herbicide glyphosate, whose damages have been documented by dozens of scientific researches without conflict of interest; damages demonstrated by over 100 thousand lawsuits against Bayer-Monsanto in the United States because of damages caused by glyphosate, mostly for generating cancer.”

There still is a resolution left – learn what steps do we need to take for the definitive protection of Mexican corn

WATER SAFETY

Find Out What’s in Your Tap Water

The Environmental Working Group reports:

“The Environmental Protection Agency recently proposed new limits to tackle drinking water contamination from the toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS. The proposal targets six notorious PFAS: PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS, PFBS and GenX.

The limits, known as maximum contaminant levels, or MCLs, are the highest level of a contaminant allowed in drinking water. The MCLs announced are 4 parts per trillion, or ppt, for PFOA and 4 ppt for PFOS. For the other four PFAS the agency is proposing using a “hazard index” which is a tool used to address cumulative risks from mixtures of chemicals.

If you’ve ever wondered what’s actually in your tap water, we have answers. Our Tap Water Database provides insight into pollutants in local water resources.”

Don’t Panic, Eat Organic

As OCA, and a growing number of nutritionists, medical practitioners, and healers never tire of pointing out, a major defense against chronic disease, the flu, cancer, heart disease, is to cultivate a strong immune system, optimum Vitamin D levels, adequate Omega 6 intake, and a healthy microbiome.

And of course, the best way to achieve this desired state is to grow, cook, and consume an organic and regenerative diet of fresh whole foods, and grass-fed or pastured meat and animal products (if you are an omnivore). In turn, this organic diet needs to be complimented by regular exercise, fresh air, sunshine, adequate sleep, positive thoughts, and natural herbs and dietary supplements.

In addition to highlighting positive solutions, it is important to keep in mind that people’s situations and perspectives are different. We all have different passions or priorities. One size or one approach does not fit all. Therefore, we need to integrate our green justice and Regeneration messages with the specific issues and concerns that are most important to grassroots constituencies. Only by starting from where people are at, and then connecting the dots, can we capture the attention and imagination of the global grassroots and get them to start thinking about how they can participate in the organic-regenerative movement and new economy.

HEALTH ISSUES

Your Body Needs Grounding

Analysis by Dr. Joseph Mercola:

“Research suggests a general lack of grounding, also referred to as “electron deficiency syndrome,” has a lot to do with the rise of modern diseases. It’s not unusual for Americans to spend entire days without being grounded. But though it has become the norm, it’s completely unnatural, and didn’t really become widespread until the advent of shoes with artificial soles that prevent grounding. When you’re grounded, free electrons from the Earth are transferred into yourbody, and these free electrons are among the most potent antioxidants known to man.

As electrons are negatively charged and free radicals are positively charged, any free radicals encountered in your tissues are electrically neutralized or canceled out by these free electrons. This is why grounding is so effective against chronic inflammation.

Also, while you may not think of your body as a generator of electricity, you are very much an electrical being, and this is in large part why it’s so important to use grounding to harness the electrical charge of the Earth.”

FARM BILL

The Farm Bill Could Address Climate Change and Structural Racism

Ray Levy Uyeda writes for Prism:

“A significant piece of legislation most voters have likely never heard of will spend the summer sitting on the cutting room floor of Congress. When the legislation is ready for a vote, it will ensure people aren’t sentenced to hunger for lack of income, dictate international trade policies, and provide support to a farm system that—depending on who you ask—is either failing or flourishing.

Colloquially known as the Farm Bill, the legislation is responsible for the allocation of billions of dollars over its five-year term. The last Farm Bill, the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, had a price tag of more than $800 billion. On its surface, the legislation is a novel-length amalgam of technical programs ostensibly designed to assist farmers. Looking closer at the Farm Bill’s near-100-year history, it’s apparent the omnibus, multiyear law has strayed far from its initial model of labor-minded price floors and supply management and crept further into the corners of federal institutions where structural racism thrives.
Forced to contend with environmental hazards and withstand climate disasters, farmworkers are hailed as essential and ignored in federal farm policy. The overwhelming majority of farmworkers in the U.S. are Latinx, and like the Black farm workers before them, continue to be excluded from basic federal workplace protections.”

GEOENGINEERING

Supercomputer Will Help Decide Whether to Block the Sun

Minho Kim, writes in E&E News:

“CLIMATEWIRE | A new supercomputer for climate research will help scientists study the effects of solar geoengineering, a controversial idea for cooling the planet by redirecting the sun’s rays.

The machine, named Derecho, began operating this month at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and will allow scientists to run more detailed weather models for research on solar geoengineering, said Kristen Rasmussen, a climate scientist at Colorado State University who is studying how human-made aerosols, which can be used to deflect sunlight, could affect rainfall patterns.

“’These technologies introduce new risks to people and ecosystems, while they could also increase power imbalances between nations, spark conflicts and raises a myriad of ethical, legal, governance and political issues,’ the E.U. statement said.

Critics of geoengineering say using aerosols and other substances to reflect sunlight away from Earth could lead to unknown, disruptive weather patterns. They also contend that solar geoengineering could result in a global dependency, because temperatures could abruptly rise if the process is stopped.”
