The Poison in the Food Says a Lot About Our Values

If there’s one area I was to point to today, to illustrate how out-of-whack our priorities are in the mainstream, manufactured, mass-market consciousness, it would be our food supply.

I say this, having just read an article about how 17 of the 25 largest food manufacturers received a failing grade when it comes to how well they’re doing in meeting the pesticide-reduction goals, which they set for themselves in 2019.

The grades, given out by a nonprofit organization that works directly with corporate leaders to develop and implement better risk-management strategies, are based on 27 key elements of risk reduction, including the identification of high-risk pesticides; the establishment of guidelines and best-practices for the use of pesticides; and a requirement for suppliers of the raw fruits, vegetables and grains that go into their packaged food products to conduct pesticide risk assessments.

The aim is multipronged: to lessen the harmful impact synthetic pesticides have on human health and other “non-target” life forms — including birds, bees, butterflies, fish and plants; to reduce groundwater contamination (which carries with it costs associated with our water bills and environmental cleanup), and to reduce the potential for pest resistance.
