Walmart president John Furner said the move is being driven by changing consumer demand for food products that align with “a more transparent food system.”

The company cited a survey that showed 54 percent of its customers scan ingredient listings on products and that 62 percent want more transparency about what goes into the foods they eat.

Walmart launched betterfoods in 2024 as part of the retailer’s foray into more plant-based food products with packaging touting “made without” ingredient listings.

The 30 ingredients Walmart has included in the elimination process include synthetic preservatives, fat substitutes and artificial sweeteners and will affect everything from colorful sports drinks to sweetened breakfast cereals and fruit snacks.

Walmart joins General Mills, Kraft Heinz and PepsiCo on a list of major brands that have announced plans to remove synthetic or artificial ingredients from their products.
