This New Tomato Tariff Could Change the Way You Cook This Summer

While many Mexican goods, including the poster child avocado, have received a reprieve from the Trump administration’s trade war on Mexico, the humble tomato has been carved out for enforcement. Today, the US placed a 17% duty on fresh Mexican tomatoes that, like a tariff, acts as a tax on an import—jolting historic trade patterns and making space for domestic growers who have long accused Mexico of unfair competition.

Some 70% of the fresh tomatoes sold in the US today come from Mexico, where they’re grown in cavernous greenhouses across the country that allow for year-round production and a diversity of shapes, sizes, and colors.
