The sit-to-stand test (sometimes called the sit-rising test) is a simple test that involves transferring from standing to sitting cross-legged on the floor and back to standing, ideally without using your hands, knees, or other objects to assist you. Research shows that the sit-to-stand test can help predict your longevity (how long you’ll live) based on your current health and fitness.12

How Do You Do the Sit-to-Stand Test?

You don’t need any special equipment to perform the sit-to-stand test. All you need is comfortable clothes and a spacious area where you won’t bump into furniture or walls.

To perform the test:

  • Start in a standing position.
  • Cross one leg over the other and lower yourself to a sitting cross-legged position on the floor.
  • With your legs remaining crossed, rise back to standing.
  • Try your best to do this action without using your hands, knees, or forearms for support, if possible. You may outstretch your arms for counterbalance, as long as you’re not pressing into them for support.
