Quote of the WeekThousands to Set Up Protest Encampment in Washington, D.C.

"Stop the Machine! Create a New World! is a clarion call for all who are deeply concerned with injustice, militarism and environmental destruction to join in ending concentrated corporate power and taking direct control of a real participatory democracy. Beginning on October 6 in Washington, D.C. we will encourage a culture of resistance – using music, art, theater and direct nonviolent action – to take control of our country and our lives. It is about courageously resisting and stopping the corporate state from destroying not only our inherent rights and freedoms, but also our children’s chance to live, breathe clean air, drink pure water, grow edible natural food and live in peace. We are the ones who can create a new and just world. Our issues are connected. We are connected. Join us in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 6, 2011, to Stop the Machine."

Lies of the Week Agribusiness Mobilizing to Stop a Possible California Ballot Initiative on Labeling Genetically Engineered Foods

The article quoted below outrageously tries to blur the definition of genetic modification by equating it with traditional plant and animal breeding. We know better, but expect more lies like this in the fight over mandatory labeling.

"The California anti-biotech/anti-genetically modified/anti-science crowd is at it again. This time around they are calling themselves ‘advocates for truth in food labeling’ and are gathering signatures to get another infamous California voter initiative on the 2012 California electoral ballot. If passed, it would mandate that GMO foods be labeled with some kind of warning. Bring it on.

"It is about time this GMO labeling issue be tackled head-on so the public can be told the truth. Truth is, everything we eat today has been genetically modified…"

The time is right to step up our efforts and move the Organic Revolution forward, but OCA needs your financial support to do so.

Mercury in Your Mouth

ALERTS OF THE WEEK

Don’t Let Your Dentist Put

If your dentist has not switched to mercury-free dentistry, this is the time for him or her to do so. Call your dentist and ask. If they use mercury and insist on sticking with it, re-consider your choice of dentists.

Silver fillings emit mercury vapor even after they have been implanted into the body. This mercury is bioaccumulative, and it crosses the placenta to accumulate in fetuses as well. Dental amalgam’s mercury is a known health risk, especially for children, fetuses, nursing infants, and people with impaired kidney function. Even the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concedes that the developing neurological systems of children and fetuses are more susceptible to "the neurotoxic effects of mercury vapor" – and that there is no evidence that amalgam is safe for these populations.
