SHIFT
IN CONGRESS SHOULD BENEFIT ORGANIC FARMERS AND CONSUMERS
Last week’s election results should have a positive effect on
the future of organics and sustainable agriculture. The Congressional
Organic Caucus, previously loaded with policymakers who sculpt
legislation benefiting big agribusiness, will welcome some new
members who’s focus will be more in the realms of consumers
and family farmers. Eleven caucus members lost their seats,
and seven of the new members are Democrats who ranked high in
the Organic Consumers Fund’s (OCF) survey of "organic candidates."
Here are some of the promising new members of the Organic Caucus:

  • Jon
    Tester won the Senate seat in Montana. Tester is an organic
    farmer and has been leader in the organic movement since 1987.
  • John
    Hall and Peter Welch both won seats in Congress and will serve
    on the Organic Caucus. Both scored a perfect 100% on the OCF
    Candidate Survey.
  • Paul
    Hodes joins the caucus after running on a platform supporting
    sustainable sources of energy, clean air and water, and addressing
    global warming.
  • Chris
    Carney will bring a much needed voice to the caucus after
    winning his campaign that supports the "adoption of renewable
    sources of energy like hybrid technologies, geothermal energy,
    bio-diesel, solar energy, and wind power.

We’d

the new members of the Organic Caucus. It’s not too late to
get our elected officials to tell us where they stand on the
issues that matter most to organic consumers before they take
office.
