OKLAHOMA CITY — A bill that would allow programs supplying nutrition-rich fresh food to be covered by Medicaid is now headed to Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt’s desk.

Senate Bill 806, known as the Food is Medicine Act, passed in the State House.

FOX23 spoke with Erin Martin, Founder of Fresh RX Oklahoma, a nonprofit food subscription for north Tulsans who have diabetes and do not have the access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

“This gives us a funding pathway to make these programs sustainable and scale them for people with chronic conditions,” she said.

Martin said SB806 would allow doctors to prescribe local food and nutrition education for people with chronic disease such as diabetes, heart failure, high blood pressure, cancer and more.
