The state of Florida has stepped up surveillance along the Alabama and Georgia borders after confirmation of two new cases of a contagious brain disorder in deer that is similar to mad cow disease.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on Oct. 7 confirmed a year-and-a-half old doe, killed by a vehicle in Holmes County not far from the Alabama border, is the state’s second case of chronic wasting disease, or CWD.
The site is less than a mile from where the first case was detected in 2023. The latest case comes the same week Georgia announced a CWD case in Lowndes County, five miles north of the Florida border.
