DES MOINES: Occupy the World Food Prize Rally on Thursday!

This week, Monsanto and its agrochemical cronies will be in Iowa, celebrating the bounties of industrial agriculture (in other words, their massive profits) at the corporation-run “World Food Prize” events.

This year will be different. Thanks to a lawsuit filed against the World Food Prize and the state of Iowa, this year’s rally will be held on State Capitol grounds where award ceremony attendees will have to see and hear the protesters as they enter the building.

What: Occupy the World Food Prize Rally
When: Thursday, October 19, 6 p.m.
Where: NW entrance of the State Capitol, 1007 E.Grand Ave., Des Moines, IA 50319

This week, Monsanto and its agrochemical cronies will be in Iowa, celebrating the bounties of industrial agriculture (in other words, their massive profits) at the corporation-run “World Food Prize” events.

This year’s winner, Dr. Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina of Nigeria, president of the African Development Bank, is a proud supporter of Big Ag and Biotech. In his words, he works to “help farmers rise to the top of the value chain by industrializing agriculture.”

Adenisa’s goal is good news for Monsanto shareholders. But it’s bad news for African food sovereignty and biodiversity.

For the last five years, Occupy the World Food Prize has held a rally to protest the World Food Prize at the State Capitol during the group’s award ceremony.

Past rallies have been confined to a sidewalk area at the bottom of a steep hill, over 100 feet from the entrance to the State Capitol. Protesters have had to use megaphones to try and make their voices heard.

This year will be different. Thanks to a lawsuit filed against the World Food Prize and the state of Iowa, this year’s rally will be held on State Capitol grounds where award ceremony attendees will have to see and hear the protesters as they enter the building.
