Stop GMO Wheat!
The recent approval of genetically modified (GMO) wheat in the United States raises significant concerns about public health and environmental safety. This GMO wheat, developed to tolerate glufosinate—a pesticide banned in the European Union since 2013 due to its toxicity—could dramatically increase the presence of agrochemicals in the American diet. Exposure to glufosinate has been linked to adverse health effects, including risks for low-birth-weight babies. Despite these concerns, the USDA approved the crop without conducting a scientific review or allowing for public input, leveraging deregulation policies enacted during the Trump administration.
The GMO wheat, produced by Argentinian company Bioceres — with backing from Monsanto (Bayer) — could mark the first instance of such crops being grown in the U.S., although they are already cultivated in parts of South America and imported by several countries. The move is part of a broader trend towards agrochemical-dependent farming systems, which contrasts starkly with the growing global demand for cleaner, GMO-free, and regenerative agricultural practices.
