Citing several wells in Gambrills with unhealthy levels of heavy metals, County Executive John R. Leopold wants to introduce emergency legislation to prohibit new fly ash deposits in the county.
If accepted and passed by County Council, the prohibition would become effective as soon as it is signed by Mr. Leopold, bypassing the usual effective date of 45 days after it is passed.
The proposal follows the discovery of dangerous metals in wells near fly ash fill sites at a Gambrills sand and gravel mine.
Health Officer Frances B. Phillips gave Mr. Leopold a memo yesterday about the dangers fly ash poses to wells.
