When you see the word organic on a food product, you expect it to be all natural….produced without any chemical additives or pesticides. But it turns out many organic products contain some very non organic ingredients.
According to nationally syndicated consumer expert Herb Weisbaum, a product can contain up to 5 percent of non organic ingredients. It’s allowable if those ingredients have been approved by the FDA.
Among the non-organic products allowed in organic food?
Cornstarch, gum, fish oil, gelatin, casings for sausages, and 19 different food colorings. Yum.
The Organic Consumers Association says allowing fish oil and sausage casings is “outrageous” …Because they could contain dangerous chemicals.
They say look for products that say 100% organic. That’s right….just plain old organic isn’t good enough anymore.
