One man’s trash is another man’s treasure and in the case of the Brown Station Landfill in Upper Marlboro that treasure is green energy.

Each year the sale of excess energy produced through the landfill’s methane gas recovery project results in $1 million in profits for Prince George’s County.

Increasing concern over global climate change and rising energy costs have piqued interest in landfill gas as a renewable energy source. Scientists and energy experts from as far away as Israel and Japan have come to study the 20-year-old Brown Station project.
