WASHINGTON //  Two environmental groups asked the federal Department of Transportation today to withdraw its approval of Maryland’s Intercounty Connector, saying soot put out by traffic will violate federal air quality standards.

The Sierra Club and Environmental Defense claim the 18-mile highway through northern Prince George’s and Montgomery counties will lead to health risks for children and others who live nearby. The groups claim the road will violate newly passed standards of the federal Clean Air Act.
