Will a pioneering 1,000-acre organic beef operation continue its mission under new ownership?
Essex is home to the most gorgeous farm in the Adirondacks, and depending on who’s talking, maybe the entire Eastern Seaboard. Tawny meadows of waving grass slope gently to the Boquet River and the emerald western Champlain hills, which are themselves adorned by the blue majesty of New York’s highest peaks.
Lake Champlain sparkles not far to the east, and to the south are miles of protected forest that serve as an avenue for all God’s creatures migrating from Lake Champlain to higher ground in the west. The 1,100-acre, 100% organic farm is also the Adirondacks’ most futuristic. Special European equipment was flown in to build a subterranean infrastructure that lengthens the growing season, drains away excess water and encourages the grasses to develop deep, drought-proof roots probing down into the moist, nutrient-rich Vergennes clay.
