March 3, 2021 — The Organic Consumers Association (“OCA”) announced today that it and Peapod Digital Labs, LLC (“PDL”) have worked together regarding the “Free From” label on “Nature’s Promise” brand food products sold through PDL’s affiliates, including Giant, Stop & Shop, and other major supermarkets.

OCA contacted PDL to express concern over the possibility of consumer confusion around the “Free From” label, which lists ingredients that are excluded from products, including, for example, artificial colors and preservatives. Since then, OCA and PDL have met to discuss a way to cooperatively address OCA’s concerns.

In connection with these discussions, PDL acknowledged its commitment to phase out the “Free From” label on its “Nature’s Promise” brand of products to avoid any potential consumer confusion.  PDL’s “Nature’s Promise” line of products also contains products that are specifically labeled as “organic” and will continue to be labeled as such.

OCA has long been at the forefront of the movement for transparent marketing in the food industry. OCA is pleased with this effort by PDL and hopes that this agreement will lead the way for others in the food industry to similarly commit to transparency and honesty with consumers.
