Nuclear Irradiation Company Tries to Intimidate Activists for Telling the Truth

August 21, 2000

News release from Public Citizen's Critical Mass Energy Project:

On July 28th our campaign was informed by managers in stores that were selling irradiated meat in Florida that irradiated meat products were no longer being sold. On July 30 this information was reconfirmed. Public Citizen sent out the following press release: "Consumers Reject Irradiated Meat in Florida: Campaign Succeeds in Educating Consumers about the Hazards of Food "Treated" with Radiation"http://www.citizen.org/cmep/rad-food/Floridarejectsradmeat.htm

Food Technology Service, Inc. and other industry interests then released this: "Consumers Endorse Irradiated Meat in Florida: Food Technology Service, Inc. Announces Sales of Colorado Boxed Beef Irradiated Fresh Ground Beef Surpass Expectations" http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/000802/fl_food_te.html

On August 9th Public Citizen received a letter from a law firm representing
Food Technology Service, Inc. warning us to "cease and desist".

Public Citizen sent a letter telling the law firm we will not be intimidated.

And we sent out a press release: http://www.citizen.org/press/pr-cmep72.htm

Endnote: On August 10th, an article by Michael Sasso, of the Lakeland Ledger, titled "Irradiated Beef Facing Cool Reception in Markets" substantiated our original claim.http://www.theledger.com/top_stories/10beef.htm
