Subject: Local Health Care Solutions
The insurance industry has sent 6,000 corporate lobbyists to Capitol Hill and spent nearly a billion dollars to influence Congress's health care legislation. The public supports universal, single-payer health care, but the health care legislation the insurance industry wrote is going to force each of us to buy insurance instead.
With the federal system so corrupted, we need to explore local health care solutions and acknowledge the fact that health care outcomes won't improve until we address these two issues:
It won't do much good to provide universal access to a system where:
Local governments are in a unique position to get to the root of the problem by creating community health care systems that emphasize prevention and ensure access to the cost-saving and effective care provided by naturopaths, midwives and integrative physicians.
The silver-lining in Congress's health care reform bill is a big increase in funding for community health centers. The $14 billion in new funding will create health centers in an additional 10,000 communities. This means we could have a program in our community like the Coalition of Community Health Clinics in Portland, Oregon, that provides free and low-cost care, including naturopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and chiropractice.
I hope that you will help our community take advantage of this new opportunity to improve public health.
