TELL KRAFT TO KEEP DRUGS
AND CHEMICALS OUT OF OUR FOOD

ACTION ALERT

VACCINES IN YOUR OREOS?
BLOOD CLOTTERS IN YOUR MAC AND CHEESE?

More than 300 open-air field trials of experimental genetically engineered
biopharmaceuticals crops--
ENGINEERED TO PRODUCE PRESCRIPTION DRUGS AND
INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS-
threaten to contaminate our food

TAKE ACTION FOR SAFE FOOD:

CALL OR EMAIL the largest food company in the U.S., Kraft Foods, at
1-800-323-0768, and ask if they can confirm that none of their foods are
contaminated with biopharmaceuticals. Ask them to remove all
genetically engineered foods from their products until they are tested
and found safe, labeled, and liability standards are in place. Or send
an instant e-message to Kraft at: http://www.gefoodalert.org/takeaction/

Genetically Engineered Food Alert recently called on the USDA to
prohibit outdoor cultivation of a new class of genetically engineered
crops that threaten to contaminate the food supply-crops engineered to
produce prescription drugs or industrial chemicals. The new crops have
already been planted in over 300 field trials at secret locations
nationwide. While corn is by far the most popular biopharm plant,
soybeans, tobacco and rice have also been engineered to produce
substances including an abortion-inducing chemical, potent growth
hormones, a blood clotter, blood thinners, industrial enzymes, vaccines,
and trypsin, an allergenic enzyme.

While measures such as buffer zones are undertaken to "minimize" the
escape of biopharmaceutical traits, the National Academy of Sciences
warns: ".it is possible that crops transformed to produce pharmaceutical
or other industrial compounds might mate with plantations grown for
human consumption, with the unanticipated result of novel chemicals in
the human food supply." The editors of Nature Biotechnology, the
leading biotech journal, recently warned: "Current gene-containment
strategies cannot work reliably in the field." A contamination incident
may already have occurred as one drug company official noted at a
government-industry conference that: "We've seen it on the vaccine side
where modified live seeds have wandered off and have appeared in other
products." And StarLink corn, planted on less than 1% of total U.S.
corn acreage, contaminated hundreds of food products and corn seed stock
with a potentially allergenic protein despite the use of gene
containment measures. Under such conditions, contamination of the food
supply with pharmaceuticals from these genetically engineered crops is
inevitable, which means that you could be eating someone else's
prescription drugs in your corn flakes.

A new report by the Genetically Engineered Food Alert coalition
details the threats that biopharm crops pose, the extent to which they
have been planted across the U.S., the failure of regulatory agencies to
serve the public, and a set of recommendations. The report, entitled
"Manufacturing Drugs and Chemicals in Crops: Biopharming Poses New
Threats to Consumers, Farmers, Food Companies and the Environment,"
can be found at www.gefoodalert.org.

WHY CONTACT KRAFT?

BACKGROUND: HAZARDS OF KRAFT'S GE FOODS

Kraft Foods is the largest food company in the country, and the second
largest in the world, with products that can be found in 99% of U.S.
households. Many of these products, such as Taco Bell taco shells,
Oreos, Lunchables, Post cereals and Stovetop Stuffing have been found
to contain untested and unlabeled genetically engineered ingredients that
may put our families and environment at risk. Risks include health and
environmental hazards such as new allergies, new plant toxins, harm to
wildlife, creation of "superweeds" from cross-pollination and increased
pesticide use. Now Kraft's products may become contaminated with
prescription drugs, increasing risks to our health and environment.

Kraft is aware of the potential health and environmental risks of
genetically engineered foods. After StarLink* corn, a variety of
genetically engineered corn not approved for human consumption
because of risk of allergic reaction, was discovered in their products,
the company recalled millions of boxes of taco shells and switched to
non-genetically engineered white corn in their corn-based taco products
to avoid further contamination.

However, Kraft continues to use questionable genetically engineered
ingredients in many of its other products.

Kraft has moved to avoid genetically engineered ingredients in their
products in Europe, showing they could be doing the same around the
world.

Kraft Foods, the largest food company in the U.S. and second largest in
the world, needs to do more to ensure that their products are safe for
our health and the environment.

ABOUT THE GE FOOD ALERT COALITION AND GEFoodAlert.org

Genetically Engineered Food Alert is a coalition that supports the
removal of genetically engineered ingredients from grocery store shelves
unless they are adequately safety tested and labeled. The campaign
provides web-based opportunities for individuals to express concern
about genetically engineered food and fact sheets on health,
environmental and economic information about genetically engineered
food. The coalition is endorsed by more than 250 scientists, religious
leaders, doctors, chefs, environmental and health leaders, as well as
farm groups.
