US Pressuring South Korea To Lower Import Tariffs

SEOUL (AP)--A U.S. trade official demanded Monday that South Korea
revamp its tax system which Washington says discriminates against imported
cars, South Korean government officials said...

It wasn't known how South Korea responded to the latest U.S. demand.

Foreign Ministry officials said the U.S. also demanded that Seoul eases
restrictions on genetically modified food, or GMO, and lift protection on
South Korean movies.

South Korea is a major importer of U.S. agricultural goods. Concern rises in
South Korea that some of those U.S. imports are genetically modified and may
be harmful to human health...

The U.S. is South Korea's largest trading partner with two-way trade
totaling $66.8 billion in 2000. South Korea is the world's fifth largest car
producer. It sold 1.6 million vehicles abroad in 2000 but imported only
11,000.

Huntsman was also scheduled to meet officials from the Ministry of
Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Construction and Transportation
before leaving Seoul Tuesday.
