Plans to Eliminate or Label GE Foods

Genuardi's Family Markets Takes a Stand on GMOS, Irradiation and Organic
Standards; Regional Leader's Announcement a Natural Way to Honor Earth Day

NORRISTOWN, Pa., April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Proactively responding to
important agricultural developments and government food policies that impact
consumers, Genuardi's Family Markets today became the first conventional
supermarket in the region to announce a company position on the issues of
genetically modified organisms (GMOs), food irradiation and organic
standards. Genuardi's announcement coincides with Earth Day in recognition
of the important connection between food production, consumer food choices
and the environment.

The company's position is a natural extension of its commitment to educate
customers about health, nutrition and food safety. "We believe consumers
have the basic right to know relevant information that will affect their
personal food choices. We also recognize the significance of individual
food preferences, and therefore, we want to guarantee choices for our
customers to the best of our ability," said Charles Genuardi, president of
Genuardi's Family Markets.

Since the early 1990's, Genuardi's has increasingly sold organic foods, and
in 1998, the Organic Trade Association awarded Genuardi's its "Big O" Award
for excellence in promoting organic products. Genuardi's supports the
USDA's proposal for uniform and consistent national standards for organic
foods. "A single national organic standard should eliminate any confusion
or doubts customers may have about these products and stimulate further
growth of the organic foods industry," said Charles Genuardi.

With regard to GMOs, Genuardi's advocates labeling of foods that have been
genetically modified or that contain GMOs. In order to ensure customer
choice, Genuardi's will try to eliminate GMOs where feasible in the
production of corporate brand products and fresh foods prepared in all of
its stores.

While labeling is not yet required on GMOs, the FDA has approved regulations
requiring labeling of all products treated by irradiation. Genuardi's
supports this position and will ensure proper display and label visibility
of irradiated products in its stores.

Because the proposed National Organic Standards prohibit the use of genetic
engineering and irradiation in the production of organic food products,
Genuardi's will offer expanded organic selections, providing alternatives to
GMO foods where feasible and non-irradiated products in categories where
there are treated products.

"We will maintain an informed position on the issues of genetically
engineered foods, irradiation and the progress of the proposed National
Organic Standards. As the link between consumers and their food sources, we
are committed to taking an active role in educating our customers and family
of employees on these important topics," said Charles Genuardi.

As part of the company's plans to educate customers and employees on these
issues, beginning in May, Genuardi's will provide a series of articles in
Inside The Market, a monthly consumer newsletter devoted to products and
topics related to health and wellness. Genuardi's will also begin
introducing these topics into its employee newsletter and employee training
programs.
