Hello Artists, Revolutionaries, Costumed Rabble-Rousers, Puppetistas, Radical Cheerleaders, Freeway Banner-Makers, Political Thespians, Cultural Creatives, Filmmakers, Photographers, Musicians, Singers, Dancers, Poets & All!

We need you to make education, action & resistance beautiful, fun, & inspiring!

If we want a just, peaceful, democratic, healthy and sustainable world 50 years into the future, we’re going to have to deal with current resource wars, human effects on the climate, worsening environmental disasters, mass extinction of plant and animal species, and the shrinking of resources humans need to survive, including drinking water and arable land.

All the doom and gloom is just depressing and causes people to feel hopeless, shut down, and turn off. We’ve got to come up with beautiful & creative ways to inspire people and politicians to turn on, tune in, and take mass action for justice, peace, democracy, health & sustainability! (Hey, that rhymes! Hum this: Justice-Peace-Democracy/Health-Sustainability…)

Art-making is one of the keys to making the movement an inviting place where people can come together as a community to share their ideas and take action for a better future.

There are already lots of people and groups that are getting creative. Let’s share our creative ideas in this forum and work together to make the most the following opportunities for action. Please add to the following list of creative groups and actions, and let us know how you're plugging in:

Hi,

I'm Bill Moyer and I direct the Backbone Campaign. (Moyer not Moyers of PBS - and no- I'm not even the wonderful Bill Moyer who wrote "Doing Democracy" - who passed away a few years ago. Thank goodness my name isn't Rumsfeld or Reagan.) We at the Backbone Campaign are down-right thrilled to be collaborating with OCA. I thought it might be helpful to add some links to our free tools here and make a short pitch for a tactic we have used since our very first action, i.e. Freeway Bannering.

Freeway Bannering Is An Easy & Effective Way to Spread Your Message!

The beauty of Freeway Bannering is that anyone can do it, and unlike yelling at your TV or radio - you get to sare literally stand up for your ideas, and usually get an immediate response from drivers passing by. Regardless of whether those who read your message agree or disagree, we have found it to profoundly empowering and an excellent way to test and amplify our ideas.

Freeway bannering is a powerful tool for activists. It's inexpensive, most of the required materials are reusable, and it's an effective way to reach thousands, even tens of thousands, of people in a short period of time. Download our instructions and character templates for creating your own banner. IMPORTANT: When printing the letters on this pdf, zoom 153% to fit on 11"x17" paper, creating larger letters.
We have faced attempts by local law enforcement to shut down our activities, but we have always bee able to withstand intimidation with a clear understanding of state law, polite insistence that we are within our First Amendment rights, and a willingness to accept a ticket if they will indicate which exact law we are violating. It is always smart to have someone with a video camera with you to document any interaction. More about our experience with a this can be found here.

Please feel free to write or call if you have any questions. And please send photos of your banner actions to info@backbonecampaign.org.
I hope that this is helpful and look forward to sharing other ideas.

That's awesome, Bill. The dear fence signs look great. The directions and lettering are really helpful.

Bump...

Thanks Alexis...I agree, people need to use their creativity in this process of acting on our rights as a 'free' people...
----

Bill...I didn't know there were so many darn 'Bill Moyers' out there...(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

It's important to remember we live in a 'Republic'...We do not live in a 'democracy'...This is an important distinction to learn about...

Take care, and have goo fun!
