Girlcott

I invite everyone to girlcott (the opposite of boycott) the Sunspot Natural Market in Kokomo, Indiana. There are very few businesses in Kokomo which encourage her help to support a "green" and/or organic lifestyle. The Sunspot is one of these. Show your support by shopping at the Sunspot Natural Market on Earth Day, April 22, 2009. For more information go to www.naturalindianamommas.ning.com

Where Are You Organic Farmers?

I inherited my parents 40 acre farm 7 years ago. It is located in Southeastern Cass County, Indiana, between Grissom Air Force Reserve Base, and Logansport. There are 27 acres of tillable ground, and they have been in the CRP program for 2 [ten year?] contracts that my father signed up for way back when. This past year the contract ended, and I chose to not go back on the USDA's welfare system. There have been absolutely no chemicals on this ground for [probably] 20 years. I believe the last time we farmed it was in 1984. My father had a mix of clover/alfalfa sowed on it, and now the weeds, small trees, briars have taken most of that over. Our tractor broke down 3 summers ago, and I haven't had anything to mow it with. It is really excellent rabbit habitat, and the deer love it too. Some of it is rolling, but probably better than half of it is on flat terrain, with maybe a couple of acres that are wet spots whenever it rains an inch or so. I pour over organic publications, websites, and catalogs, and would like to get it mowed, and re-seeded in sweet clover, or something that would reach down in the ground and re-vitalize what is there. I am interested in getting into bees, and having some hives on the property, that is why the sweet clover sounds like the right thing to start with. I would like to see it produce something, and don't have much money to do anything as of this season. I have all the parts to put the tractor back together, but not very much equipment to do anything other than keep it mowed. If anybody is interested in talking, whether to come and farm it, or just give me some pointers on how to get started, I am very open to "the organic way". I have contemplated renting out garden spots to folks who want an unspoiled plot, but don't know how to get started doing that, other than putting up some ads, or placing some ads in the local newspaper. I retire in January 2011, and will be devoting as much time, money and energy that I can at that time, but right now, my heart tells me to see who is out there that may be interested. May God bless you all, and organic agriculture. harley farmboy, Walton, Indiana
