Soil Survival

A new report shows how regenerative agriculture can repair and even reverse the impacts of our climate crisis.

Regenerative Agriculture and the Soil Carbon Solution is a white paper from the Rodale Institute based on years of research data. It shows that the ability to transform the way we farm is within our grasp. Instead of relying on industrial practices like monocultures, extensive tillage, pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, we could adopt “a system of farming principles that rehabilitates the entire ecosystem and enhances natural resources, rather than depleting them.”

We could begin tomorrow if we chose—and start drawing down more than 100% of current annual CO2 emissions, while at the same time boosting biodiversity both above and below the ground.

Regenerative farming brings other benefits too: reduction in pesticide use, improved soil health, higher nutrient density in our foods, better farm profitability and the revitalization of rural communities.

Dietary ‘Influencers’

As a conscious consumer who takes control of your health, you may give little thought, much less weight, to the federal Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Maybe it’s time you did. Maybe it’s time we all do.

The dietary guidelines handed down by the federal government dictate how hundreds of millions of your tax dollars are allocated for nutrition programs that serve vulnerable children, seniors and veterans—the very people whose poor health increased their risk of getting, or dying from, COVID-19.

Every five years, the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA) hand down an updated version of the federal Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

And every five years, Big Food and Big Pharma lobbyists line up to try to influence those guidelines—either directly, or indirectly through groups pretending to look out for you.

One of those “influencers” is the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). For years, CSPI cozied up to Monsanto and the biotech industry. Now the so-called “public interest” group is attacking the natural health industry for trying to keep people healthy during the pandemic.

We had a public health crisis before the pandemic hit. A crisis caused in large part by poor diets peddled by Big Food lobbyists and promoted by their friends in Congress. A crisis that resulted in the U.S. racking up nearly 25 percent of all COVID-19 related deaths, despite accounting for only about 4 percent of the global population.

If ever we needed dietary guidelines based on the latest, most rigorous science, and solid advice on natural health, that time would be now. Five years from now might be too late.

Deadly Serious

As COVID-19 claims its 1 millionth death, one thing has become clear: We can’t solve this global health crisis by throwing more vaccines and pharmaceutical drugs at it.

The greatest risk factor for death from COVID-19 is poor health. According to the CDC, 94 percent of death certificates for COVID-19 victims in the U.S. were in people with pre-existing health conditions including diabetes, obesity, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, dementia and hypertension.

In fact, people who are obese, who also have the coronavirus, are more than twice as likely to end up in the hospital and nearly 50 percent more likely to die.

These health conditions are the real 21st century plague, caused by the non-stop consumption of addictive junk foods that make-up 60 percent or more of the calories in the typical American diet. Calorie- and chemical-laden, they destroy our health, our gut microbiomes and our immune systems, leaving us, as individuals, vulnerable to disease and our world vulnerable to destructive pandemics.

We must stop believing the industry propaganda spouted by Big Food, Big Ag and Big Pharma that chronic disease and the co-morbidities that accompany the vast majority of COVID-19 deaths are “normal” or “natural.” They’re not!

Our global health emergency cannot be solved without a fundamental change in our diets and our industrialized Big Ag and Big Food practices.
