Organic Valley Speaks Out Against Intensive Confinement Dairies Certified as "Organic"

Protect Organic Integrity on Pasturing!

Dear Farm Friend,

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) has drafted recommendations to
establish true pasturing standards for the USDA National Organic Program.

Organic Valley farmers know that you expect organic dairy cows to be treated
humanely and provided with access to sunshine and healthy pastures. That's
the way we operate, and it's the reason why we are urging you to support the
new NOSB pasturing recommendation.

We are asking you to respond to the USDA's request for further comments and
send a strong message supporting the NOSB Livestock Committee's
recommendations. There are two ways to respond:

OPTION 1 (preferred)
Send a personal letter to the following address for delivery before Monday,
February, 28! Feel free to borrow language from our form letter (see OPTION 2).

Ms. Francine Torres, Administrator
USDA-AMS-TMP-NOP
1400 Independence Avenue, SW., Room 4008-So, AG Stop 0268
Washington, D.C. 20250-0200

OPTION 2

Your comments in support of both the NOSB recommendation and the original
intention of the law--that cows be free to graze whenever possible--will
make this expectation a reality for all organic dairy producers. Your
opinion matters, and will be reflected in the continued integrity of the
USDA Organic seal.

Deadline for comments is Monday, February 28, so please take action today!

With sincere thanks for your support,

The Farmers and Staff of Organic Valley
